What equivalent fractions are

Equivalent fractions name the same amount using different numbers: 1/2, 2/4, 3/6 and 50/100 all describe half of a whole. You make an equivalent fraction by multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the same non-zero number — for example 2/3 × 4/4 = 8/12. Multiplying by 4/4 is multiplying by 1, which is why the value does not change. Understanding equivalence is the foundation for comparing, adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators.

What is in the worksheet pack

Three ways to check equivalence

  1. Multiply or divide: can you get from one fraction to the other by multiplying or dividing top and bottom by the same number?
  2. Simplify both: reduce each to lowest terms; equivalent fractions simplify to the same fraction.
  3. Cross-multiply: a/b and c/d are equivalent if a × d = b × c. For 3/4 and 9/12: 3 × 12 = 36 and 4 × 9 = 36, so they are equivalent.

Simplifying fractions

To write a fraction in lowest terms, divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor (GCF). For 18/24, the GCF is 6, so 18/24 = 3/4. If you do not spot the GCF straight away, divide by any common factor and repeat: 18/24 ÷ 2/2 = 9/12, then ÷ 3/3 = 3/4. A fraction is in simplest form when the only common factor of the numerator and denominator is 1.

Teaching tips

Who it is for

Students in grades 3–5, where equivalent fractions are a key standard, plus older students who need review before adding and subtracting fractions. Teachers, tutors and homeschooling families can use the sheets for practice, homework and assessment. Problems are generated systematically and checked, so answer keys are consistent.

Formats

Worksheets and keys are print-ready PDFs and editable Word files. Fraction strips print in black and white for students to colour.

From equivalence to operations

Once students are fluent with equivalent fractions, the next steps come naturally. Comparing 3/4 and 5/6 is easy after rewriting them as 9/12 and 10/12. Adding 1/3 + 1/4 requires the common denominator 12, giving 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12. Converting fractions to decimals and percentages uses the same idea: 3/5 = 60/100 = 0.6 = 60%. Revisiting the fraction wall whenever a new operation is introduced helps students connect each step back to the idea of equal parts.

Frequently asked questions

What grade learns equivalent fractions?

Typically grades 3–4, with further practice in grade 5.

How do you find an equivalent fraction?

Multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same number.

Are answer keys included?

Yes, for every worksheet.

What are fraction strips?

Bars divided into equal parts that let students compare fractions visually.

Was AI used to create the worksheets?

The problems were generated by a script and checked; the explanations were drafted with AI assistance and reviewed before publishing.
